Priyadarshini Mattoo's friends, youth activists start campaign to get 'Justice For Priyadarshini'

New Delhi, 3rd July, 2006: Priyadarshini means lovely. And so she was; a lovely girl with a zeal for life. She was not only a law student, but an award winning singer. She was the apple of her parents' eyes, and an inspiration to her friends and family.

Priyadarshini Mattoo was brutally raped and murdered in her home in South Delhi on 23rd January, 1996. Her murderer had stalked her for over a year. As he smashed her body in a violent rage, she inflicted wounds on him. She fought for every last breath of her life.

At the conclusion of the trial, the Judge wrote that "though I know he is the man who committed the crime, I acquit him, giving him the benefit of doubt... The influence of the father [IGP] has been there in the matter and there was deliberate inaction [by the CBI]."

Under a new Director, the CBI appealed the case calling it a "miscarriage of justice" and were "shocked with the acquittal order. The Mattoo case shows there is no accountability in the system." The case has remained pending in the Delhi High Court since.

Several of Priyadarshini's old friends and youth activists from around the world have formed the group "JUSTICE FOR PRIYADARSHINI", which seeks justice in the case.

"How many more years are we going to hide our heads in the sand? How many more years are we going to take to ensure our daughters and sisters are safe?" asked Indu Jalali, a childhood friend of Priyadarshini. She added: "India was once a country where women were given more respect than anywhere else in the world. What happened?"

The group first began a signature campaign, which has thus far received an overwhelming response. On 23rd July, 2006, on what would have been Priyadarshini's 36th Birthday, JUSTICE FOR PRIYADARSHINI will commemorate her life by organising a rally at India Gate in the late afternoon.

"A war cry for justice in the heart of Delhi, a protest that shakes the pillars of the Government with just one simple demand - let justice be delivered completely and immediately", said Aditya Raj, a youth activist with the group. "Priyadarshini's own family had tried for so long to get justice, but were unsuccessful thanks to the exploitation of the common man by those in power. Her parents are now too old to continue the struggle, so we youth will now bring justice."

At the conclusion of the rally on July 23, the group will submit a petition to the President of India at his residence. A copy of the petition will also be delivered to the Chief Justice of India.

"We have already received support from many NGOs, Students groups and women's groups in the Capital. We hope to have some lawyer organisations also join our struggle to bring justice to Delhi and to all women" said Sapna Kaul, a student.

The group has demanded an immediate retrial in the pending case to right the wrongs of the past, and to restore the Indian public's faith in the State and its institutions.

How can you help?

These are some of the things that we need to do; you can be a help in any one or more of these:

1) We need to flare this cause up as much as we can in the media - India or outside India.

2) We need people to suggest us slogans, ideas for banners/posters.

3) We need to make sure all possible organizations (particularly in Delhi) come out extending massive support for the protest rally. These could be Womens' Rights Organizations, Human Rights Organizations, Residents' Welfare Associations, Social Organizations, NGOs etc.

4) Promote the rally/appeal/petition as much as we can. Spread the word like wild fire among all Indians. SMS campaigns, calls to radio stations etc. can be of help. That can create a snowball effect.

5) We need tens of highly dedicated and motivated volunteers in Delhi.

6) We need people all over the country to write to their local media - TV/print, and protest in ingenious ways. For example, by honking at 4:30p.m. (time of the protest rally) anywhere in the country on Sunday 23rd July, 2006 or wearing a black ribbon around your fore-arm on Monday 24th July, 2006 as a mark of continuing agitation!

7) We will need financial help too. Right now, we do NOT have an organizational account. We will have an organizational account very soon.

Excerpts (verbatim) from the final verdict of Priyadarshini Mattoo case establishing motive behind the murder:

Why the accused went to this extent agitates the mind? Why the accused was after the deceased?... The good conscious directs that it was intended to put pressure upon the deceased so that the accused may have her. And the deceased should not resist his action in any manner. Either by requesting the University authorities or the Police authorities and should not press for the actions initiated by her on account of harassment meted out to her at the hands of the accused and thus ultimately the accused may have her even against her wishes... The complaint by the accused (against Priya) was counterblast to the resistive action of the deceased in not succumbing to designs of the accused which were intended to harass her... The accused according to the personalities as understood in science of Psychology falls in the category of tough minded people... The acts of the accused lead to the inference that the accused had the motive to have the deceased at all event and failing to not to allow her to be of any body else...

JUSTICE 4 PRIYADARSHINI

Priyadarshini means lovely. And so she was. A lovely girl with massive zeal for life. Law and Music were among her passions. She was the apple of her parents' eyes, as is any other daughter to her parents. She was brutally raped and murdered by the son of an IGP. This has been the only case in the history of India where the judge himself clearly wrote that he knew the accused was the culprit and CBI had not acted fairly.

It was a shame for the country's judicial system. A shame for New Delhi.

To add salt to the injury, the culprit is a lawyer in Delhi's Tees Hazari Court.

How many more years are we going to hide our heads in the sand? How many more years are we going to assume that our daughters and sisters are safe?

This in a country where women are traditionally given more respect than anywhere else in the world. How ironical?

Justice J.P. Thareja's words:

''Though I know he is the man who committed the crime, I acquit him, giving him the benefit of the doubt."

"The CBI in the matter of DNA evidence has not acted fairly. It tampered with the evidence of clothes of the deceased and also the blood sample of the accused.It even fabricated the documentary evidence and also the Malkhana Register of the CBI as is clear from the discrepancies."

10 years .. Justice denied. She is waiting with her lovely smile as are her parents' wet eyes and a broken heart.

23rd January, 1996 she was murdered.

Sunday, 23rd July is her birthday. A war cry for justice in the heart of Delhi, a protest that shakes the pillars of the Govt. and one demand - Let justice be delivered immediately.
